Problem getting started with Ledger

Here's my ledger.dat:

2014/09/29 Employer
    Assets:Checking $500.00
    Income:Salary

When I run ledger -f ledger.dat balance, I get this error:

Error: Posting with null amount's account may be mispelled:
  "Assets:Checking $500.00"

Why?
