I'm not following this interesting discussion in every detail, so I'm
not sure if this can help any part of this problem space, but just in
case: Have you considered or already implemented hledger's approach for
balancing transactions, which is based on display precision ? Ie amounts
are considered to balance if their sum appears to be zero when it's
rendered using the canonical display precision. This seems to fit user
expectations well.
