There is no reason you can't use whatever extension you like and have that be standard across your system.
I have an unpopular opinion that making ledger too easy would actually hurt us. We aren't really set up to handle users whose primary skills are pointing and clicking. A minimal understanding of command line usage, basic text editing and file structure are the entry requirements. If you have those, then the issues you are talking about melt away.
