In preferences.el I added as follows:-
(autoload ’ledger-mode "ledger-mode" "A major mode for Ledger" t)
(add-to-list ’load-path
(expand-file-name "/path/to/ledger/source/lisp/"))
(add-to-list ’auto-mode-alist ’("\\.ledger$" . ledger-mode))
