I, too, am using/trying spacemacs for quite some time now, and I have
to say, it is brilliant! :)

On topic: I ran into the same problem, if you need anyone to test
something, I can help.

If you do not want to do this, you can also clone the spacemacs repo to
/some/path/.emacs.d and start emacs like this:

HOME=/some/path emacs

$HOME is then set to /some/path in spacemacs (which can be a bit
annoying), but otherwise this is quite convenient for testing purposes!
