The same problem seems to exist for balance assertions:

Liabilities:B = -250 ABC
-------------
Running ledger bal on this file gives
> 2015-02-02 Check
> Liabilities:B = -250 ABC
Unbalanced remainder is:
-250 ABC
Amount to balance against:
0
Error: Transaction does not balance
