I think they should be mutually exclusive. Normally with a change like this, the path would be: 1. Support both, but clearly state that ’%(’ is deprecate in the manual. 2. After a few releases, change ’%(’ to generate a deprecation warning. 3. After a few releases more, change ’%(’ to be a parsing error, with a note that the syntax has changed to ’$(’.
