I don't believe the UK - which has historically been a nation of  
serfs under the king - has ever pretended to be free.

For instance, I don't think we're progressing too rapidly on the  
ratification of the European Constitution (whatever they're calling  
it this week) and are put to shame on that by formerly-communist  
countries such as Estonia & Lithuania.

However, emigration from the UK is currently at an all time high.
