As per your suggestion, I have commented the final line in pos.conf.pl
referencing the printer, now the contents of the pos template print at
the top of the frame, regardless of whether I choose the printer or the
screen option.
I am also still getting the unreferenced scalar error, is this related
to the printing, or likely it is an error for something else?

Hi Bob;
Comment out the printer definition in the pos.conf.pl if you want to
use the same settings as your ledgermb.conf.
The major reason for not doing this is that cups takes time to spool,
so if you are spooling on the print server, then spooling on the POS
terminal, you may have some delays. In that case, you will want to
take a look at the utils/pos directory for the direct to port printing
capabilities.
