Brian I had this requirement a while ago for the same reason. Basically I had to hack the code so that the temp file that is created and passed to tex2latex (or equivalent) got copied somewhere where it wouldn't be deleted afterwards. Its just a Perl system() command I think.
Unfortunately it was some time ago and I let the upgrades do the overwriting.. sorry.
