Well what a game -came out of ER buzzing, never mind getting the defence sorted
IF we can win like this (of course our recent results and football history in
general prove you can't)
>From the start we were the better team, the recall of Johnson and back to 4 5
>1 really suits this group of players for differ net reasons. We tore into them
>and ripped them to shreds - we could have had 5 or 6 we had that many shots
>saved, just past the post or scrambled away. Max got on the end of a good
>Howson pass that the defender could not quite cut out and he took it on and
>lashed a cracker into the corner from outside the box. We had that many
>chances after that I have forgotten most except one sky-er from Howson on the
>volley and then Snoddy rounding the keeper and falling over. We were all
>settling for 1 0 at half time, when with almost the last kick of the half a
>ball over the top dissected O'Brien and the recalled Bromby and Kasper came
>out late and although he blocked it the forward put in the rebound from a
>tight angle - one visit to our area and one goal -business as usual for our
>defence. So instead of going off to rapturous and deserved
ovations the team trudged off to stunned silence and a few boos.
Second half we started OK and then somehow found ourselves behind - the natives
were very restless but enter King Johnny, our captain fantastic. He had had a
good first half and then within seconds of their second he steamed into a
tackle with two of theirs , won the ball, stormed forward and hit a belter into
the corner 2 2 and only behind for a minute, too short a time to affect
confidence or let the crowd get on their backs. As my lad pointed out it was
the sort of thing that Steve Gerard has been doing for the scousers for ages -
a "we are not losing this game" mentality" and he went on to take the game by
the scruff of the neck in his best performacne ever for us.
We then played as we had in the first half and took them to the cleaners, a
ball into the box was nodded on by Bromby and Becchio hit it home from the
penalty spot - originally looked offside but the replay on the scoreboard
showed he wasn't. We continued to press Max unbelievably  missed 2 one on one
chances that you would expect him to bury, Johnson headed over when he should
have scored, Kilkenny even had a couple of chances.
Somewhere in the  midst of all this Paynter came on and was fed by Snoddy but
hit the keeper from a couple of yards out and Max with his left buried the
rebound. Then a lovely ball from Snoddy found Howson through on his own and he
showed Max how to finish a one on one. And that was FIVE
We chanted for six and we chanted for Billy to score but it was not to be and
we had to settle for a very convincing,if at times nail-biting, 5 2 victory in
which Howson, Snoddy and Max were all brilliant (Max misses apart)
Bromby did look slightly more commanding at the back than Bruce or indeed
O'Brien have been. Club captain Naylor also got a few minutes at the end but
shamefully his introduction was met with a few boos - morons.
One other memory is a clear cut, blatant shove on Howson seen by all except the
ref - the chant of "we always get shit refs" went up and the twat could be seen
smiling and laughing at the jibe !!!
So all in all a great game, do fans really want a return to the George Graham
football ? and results elsewhere mainly , and in some cases, surprisingly, going
our way
Dave
