Becchio is a key player for us when we play the 4-5-1 we are playing
these days. He rarely gets you purring with delight at his silky skills
(although he's got me jumping up with my hands in the air shouting
"YES!" 17 times this season), but the way we play 4-5-1 needs a target
man with a lot of hustle and bustle making a real nuisance of himself up
front creating space and time for the three attackers (usually Howson,
Snodgrass and Gradel) to get forward past him. Obviously there are
other ways to play a 4-5-1, but this one generally seems to work OK for us.
When we played part of the game against Barnsley with Somma as the lone
striker, I noticed that he didn't challenge the defenders for the ball
at all. There's no doubt Somma is a much more talented footballer than
Becchio, but if nobody is doing what Becchio does, then we don't get to
see the best of H, S & G. Paynter is obviously Grayson's second choice
for this role, and we've had the chance to have a decent look at him in
the last few games; and he's hardly covered himself in glory, has he?
