I've just come back from Elland Road, where me and my youngest have just enjoyed the stadium tour hosted by John McClelland.
Interesting if somewhat restricted tour - a wedding, business function and event with Geoff Boycott speaking, all taking place at the same time, meant we couldn't go everywhere :-( But John's tales of low pay and high jinks during his time at ER were entertaining, and there was lots of ace stuff to gawp at like a '72 Wembley shirt signed by all our most glorious warriors, pennants from some great clubs we've played and replica silverware. I particularly enjoyed sitting in the dug out, and the fact that me and Sid were just about the only people on the tour from England, everyone else coming from Ireland, Australia, Norway, Denmark and elsewhere. Not a big club anymore? But what I found most amusing were the motivational posters stuck to the walls of the dressing room. These A4 laminated sheets had such pithy nuggets as "Winning teams are brave and honest" and "Winning teams believe in their ability". But my favourite, and the one I think needs enlarging a bit from A4 was "Winning teams have a clean sheet mentality". I had to laugh! Oh yes, and there's a mini bar full of beer in the official's changing room! Could explain some of the dodgy decisions we see from time to time.
