In the mid eighties there were all sorts of musical things going on in String O'Beads. One of the favourite haunts for anyone looking to get a hangover and some good music was the Astoria in Harehills.
Various people promoted events there from John Keenan through to the bands themselves. There was a set up called Blind Eye productions who would put regular gigs on there (as well as other places) and somewhere along the line they issued a couple of cassette compilations featuring the bands they were promoting. They also put on gigs in headingley and I think they were behind the charity all dayers at the Royal Park. As is usual with these things LOP would get copies to review and up in my loft I've got a rare old collection of these things. Recently I was up there hiding from the sun and I stumbled across a cassette called the Astoria Collection. It features bands who I sort of recognise but other than the year (1985) there is no info about who is who or who plays what, although I think The Sinister Cleaners are in there. I've uploaded a zip file of mp3s from this cassette to http://hotfile.com/dl/117607825/668ce1a/astoria.zip.html so you can all share it. The mekons had issued Fear and Whisky, the miners strike had ended on ended on 3 March 1985 and this is what was being played on stage in Leeds The last track of all, I think, is Richard Rouska and Fi MacMillan may be on the penultimate track. Be great if someone with a better memory than me can fill in the gaps. prepare to be underwhelmed................
