I think that is a reasonable definition of fair in a sport designed for
entertainment.  Someone sets the rules, we all play by them, its fair - its
what being British is all about - think about that Alex Salmon!

In your "good old days" scenario it was dreadfully unfair on the teams from
4th to 24th cos they didn't get promoted.  Even if they tried really really
hard. 

It is awfully unfair that you can't just stand in front of the keeper all
game and punch him in the face when the ball comes near - unless you are
Duncan Ferguson.
