A dreich day in North Lanarkshire wasn't promising any surprises, the
lively but well natured Leeds crowd clearly understood the game plan:
positive to the team, unhappy with the Beast and the odd pot shot at
Paynter.
We had met fellow Scottish based Leeds supporter, Richard just twenty
minutes before kick off, Richard had been at Falkirk and wasn't
expecting great things. Even though quite a few of the Leeds supporters
had stayed up since Wednesday, he felt the crowd were different to
midweek. Positive was the word.
The first half allowed toss pot Paynter who was alone up front to show
off his questionable skills and Leeds go one down to a pedestrian shot
from Motherwell's Murphy, allowed into the net by poor defending.
Ross McCormack, who has previously played for Motherwell, fluffed a soft
penalty which the keeper saved easily as the ball trickled across the
daisies but that didn't stop my IFA pal, Frazzle from Motherwell texting
me after the goalkeeper error which gave Leeds their first goal to say
that he expected to see more of that from Darren Randolph in the new
season, which suggests that McCormack should have slotted it.
Back up keeper, Paul Rachubka was more than competent for 85 minutes, in
spite of Murphy's first half goal, substitute Cairns had very little to
do for his short tenure. Grayson had made four changes at half-time
with Alex Bruce, Ben Parker, Max Gradel and Robert Snodgrass all being
handed run-outs. Nunex replaced Paynter and then it was game on.
Bruce and Nunez made sure of the win and the final 30 minutes were more
than entertaining. Nunez's solo effort was a joy to watch, as was
Bruce's grin and salute to the Leeds faithful after his close range goal
which came off a Gradel corner cross.
An interesting day out - I left the Highlands at 10am with Dave Dowden
who had cycled down from Shetland to join me and arrived back in the
Highlands at 11pm. A cheap £10 ticket, a great view from the away end,
(South Stand) at Fir Park and even a drink in the Horseshoe Bar made me
feel it was all worth it. Plus all the Lexia3 remapping on the C5 means
that I might get further than Victoria Park this season!

PS one could have been forgiven for thinking one was at Valley Parade,
even with the presence of Stuart McCall.
