We won against Prem opposition (albeit they were poor and are a week behind us
in preparation) and we deserved it. For the most part we were pretty good.
Howson was outstanding and IF he can turn it on like this week by week he can
be both our, and the Divisions. top player. Also -cards on the table -I will
state now and fans can shoot me down later, Clayton WILL be a top player for
us. He is better than both Johnson and Kilkenny and he can be part of a much
better midfield than the one that let us down so often last season. If we can
keep Kisnorbo fit then him and O'Brien can make a decent pairing at the back
and I hope that SG will use Lees, rather than Bromby or Bruce as back up.
Though I think that SG is a bit conservative and rates experience above actual
talent and ability.I do worry about having only mcCornack up front and it was
nice to see Billy get the winner - I get that some fans have their favourites
and / or players they dislike (my lad gave
Johnson dogs abuse last season and even put a damper on his goal v Arse) but I
don't understand fans who chant stuff against their own,so it was awful to hear
the crap and unoriginal 'if Billy scores we are on the pitch' songs which led
to him, instead of celebrating what is hopefully his breakthrough goal,
gesturing to fans to make good their song and run on!!I sent a text at half
time to say i was not that impressed with Longeren but he then made as good a
point blank reflex save as we will see all season, so maybe there is hope there
too.
Like many I have been unsure about the lack of incoming transfers, but to me the
3 who have gone are no great loss and I hope that Brown, Clayton and Longeren
plus the return of Kisnorbo and the addition of Mendy, who again looked decent,
will actually show that we have had, despite appearances, a good closed
season. The Hungarian left back did nothing to suggest he is the answer but both
Sam and Nunez looked livley
Overalll some grounds for optimism and a decent unbeaten pre-season. The real
stuff starts next week - bring it on
Dave
