Just looked him up in my 'Leeds United Player by Player book' which lists all
the managers from Revie to Wilko at the backThe bit about Adamson has the
following quotes "by the end of his 2 year tenure, he had become the most
reviled Leeds manager in modern times"   ......"too often the team looked
ordinary or worse" ......"having sold Tony Currie the midfield heart no longer
beat with flair and colour" ......"won 4 from 17 a famine the like of which
fans had not known for almost 20 years" ......."Supporters called for Adamson
to be sacked after an abysmal 0 0 home draw with Coventry"  " Attendances
regualrly below 20,000 and a wretched start ...brought calls for his head to a
crescendo" ......."he had soaked up much abuse before resigning " ....."in his
wake survival rather than cups and Championships became a preoccupation at ER"
To put him in context it went Revie, Clough, Armfield, Stein, Adamson, Clarke,
Gray, Bremner, Wilko.
Whilst fans did turn on Clough and Venables, and Wise was a very unpopular
choice when he came (he did win us round in fairness) - none of them got
anything like the vitriol and abuse Adamson got. He is the only manager I can
recall us having "Out" chants at. and big demonstrations to get rid of him. We
even had the police charging into us outside the West Stand as things turned
nasty.
Me and my mates nearly got a kicking when during the "bring back Don Revie to
Leeds" chants (to tune my Bonnie lies over the ocean) my mate started singing
"Dig up Les Cocker for Leeds" - Les Cocker was the Dons right hand man and had
recently died. We thought it was funny (oh to be young again) but a couple of
lads stood near us were less than happy to say the least !
