A friend of mine who has little interest in things that aren't Premiership
asked me the other day how Leeds were doing. I summed it up by saying that
although we were currently top 6, we weren't playing that well and lacked
imagination and basic ability sometimes. He responded "So you're at the
top, playing not that great, just wait until you have a good patch"
I admired his positive outlook, but couldn't help thinking that this is how
we function and we could go some time before the hoof and hope ball is a
thing of days gone by.
I felt this particularly against Burnley who pretty much out "everythinged"
us and it was only the 2 goals from Snods that won us that. Glad they got a
result the following week.
So, what do we want / have? A team of long ball hopefuls that rely on
individuals like Snodgrass (currently) to bring home the bacon, or, a more
complete and balanced team performance (a la Burnley) who did most things
well, but lost (on the day) to us. I'd take the latter in the knowledge that
it's going to come right sooner or later. LU seems to be dogged by lumping
optimistic long balls syndrome only to lose possession 8 times out of 10. I
wonder if it's linked with players being uncomfortable on the ball so they
part panic and hoof away - or perhaps Grayson specifically coaches them to
do this (please no!) Imagine what a laughing stock we'd be in the
Premiership employing this. The likes of Swansea and QPR in recent seasons
were promoted on a very different diet and style, so why can't we?
