Yes it was definitely a by-product of rec.sport.soccer newsgroup (or subgroup of that like uk.rec.sport.soccer), I just cannot remember how long we made do with maintaining our own lists of the other email addresses. I think when I "joined" the list was around 20 emails long.
Pretty soon after Gav joined he made use of his Uni resources and used its listserv so we only had to remember one email address. The rest is infamy, I mean history. List bust ups back then were limited to arguments about Wilko, I dont remember any of this calling our own team/current players shite. Carlton Palmer may have been the first of those?
