Former QPR boss Neil Warnock could happily retire and fund his tractor habit with the occasional spot of TV punditry. But if football were a drug, Warnock would need a long stay in rehab and the *Life’s A Pitch* panel reckons he’ll be back soon, possibly at Nottingham Forest, Leeds United or Ipswich Town.
“He’s an expert at firefighting and bringing teams into the Premier League. His natural home is in the Championship resurrecting a club,” says *former Arsenal player and journalist Adrian Clarke*. But a move to Leeds – as has been speculated – could end in disaster, says Adrian: “It’d be an interesting combination with [Leeds owner] Ken Bates, and could a former Sheffield United manager go to Leeds? Personally, I’d like him to see him go to Ipswich, my childhood club. I think he would turn them round.” Taking over at Leeds would present the former Sheffield United manager with an extra challenge, agrees* John Cross of the Daily Mirror. *“He’s a Blade through and through. Can he separate that passion from his profession as a manager?” But, says John, “he has unfinished business in the Premier League. If you recruit him you’ll get a manager who’ll definitely get you up. The biggest thing that’ll hurt him about QPR is that he wasn’t given the opportunity to keep a team up.” *The Daily Express’ Ian Ridley *thinks Leeds’ current transfer policy – as captain Jonny Howson heads for the exit – could also put Warnock off Elland Road. “He’d be reluctant to go to Leeds because the indications are they’re cutting, not investing,” Ian says, adding that the Nottingham Forest job would attract Warnock, but that he expects [Forest boss] Steve Cotterill to be given a little more time at the City Ground. And he throws in this curve ball: “I wonder whether he might offer his services to Plymouth, just to help them stay up.” The panel also takes a look at Mark McGhee’s appointment at Bristol Rovers.
