Leeds United 2 Ipswich Town 1: Snodgrass and McCormack net for Whites

AN awful blunder by new captain Andy Lonergan meant Leeds United went in
behind at the break on a cold afternoon at Elland Road, writes Richard
Sutcliffe.
The home side were well below their best against Ipswich and they paid
the price on 34 minutes when Lee Martin’s shot was allowed to trickle
into the net by Lonergan.
United’s goalkeeper had made a superb block to deny Lee Martin just a
couple of minutes before his howler after the United defence had been
opened up by an incisive pass.
Even so, that did little to lessen the magnitude of the howler that
allowed Drury to beat him at the near post after exchanging passes with
Martin from a short corner.
It was a poor mistake from a player who has been among United’s most
consistent this season.
On the balance of play, however, Leeds could have few complaints at
being behind with the visitors having looked the more likely to score
even before Drury’s opener.
Daryl Murphy had gone close with a header that Darren O’Dea did well to
block, while only the smart intervention of Tom Lees prevented Martin
skipping clear of the home defence on 11 minutes.
United rarely troubled Alex McCarthy on his return to Elland Road, the
home side’s only ‘effort’ being a shot that was deflected well wide.
McCarthy was sent off to reduce Ipswich to ten men and Robert Snodgrass
used the numerical advantage to equalise for United on 74 minutes.
Ross McCormack netted for United on 82 minutes.
