I disagree. If Bates had gotten us up last season, I bet Howson would have
stayed. It is Bates' lack of ambition (that's a nice way of putting it) that is
holding us back. (It may turn out that Grayson can't quite cut it at the very
top of the Championship, but I'd like to see him given more quality to test
that notion.) Bates has quite clearly not spent the "bonus" money we've
received in the last couple of seasons years - fees for Delph, Gradel,
Schmeichel, Howson and the kids nicked by Chelsea, Everton, Spurs and Atletico
Madrid; TV and attendance money from cup ties versus Man U (twice), Liverpool,
Arsenal (twice) and Spurs - on the playing staff (or if he has, it's not
reflected in transfer fees, so we must be playing codgers like Brown ludicrous
wages).

Cheers!

Sean

AchieveD being the pertinent tense.

Unless we were mathematically up NOW, he wouldn’t have signed. Most players
might well assume that even as little as, say, being 10 points clear would
be "guarantee" enough for them to sign, Howson knows as well as the rest of
us that 10 point leads can disappear in no time.

And also, you are now getting into Ridsdale territory, because to try and
buy a guarantee of being top two now AND FAR ENOUGH CLEAR TO GUARANTEE
PROMOTION, would have meant spending ridiculous money (look at who/what we
are competing against currently).

Lets put this another way so you people living in denial can grasp the
situation - as it stands Howson would NOT have signed for us had we been in
either Southampton, or West Hams position. Because both are only a few
points clear of Cardiff, and the rest of the pack not far behind.

Is it sinking in yet? Howson wanted to play premier league NEXT season, he
would therefore not sign a contract with ANY championship club this January
because no championship club has been promoted yet, nor are they anywhere
near guaranteed to be.

This is nothing to do with Bates, loyalty, contracts, Ben Parker, Grayson
shagging O'Briens wife or even Cantona shagging Lesley Ashe.

But what if we had achieved promotion? What if we had bought some decent
players last summer and now been in the top two?

Bates Out.

Video of Jonny talking about the move.

It could be crocodile tears that he is shedding but he does seem genuinely
sad to leave. It it's 100% clear he would have left in the Summer if we
hadn't got promoted so it's his decision to go and best of luck to him, but
no point in blaming Bates or Grayson.
