I wondered the same thing - LU should have paid but I wouldn't put it past Bates to have made Warnock stump up.
Stop me if this has been on the list before. But given that the oft-quoted fortune of Bates is supposed to be 17M quid (plus or minus), it must cost him an awful lot more money being a tax-exile in MC than his tax liabilities would be in the UK(*). Does he have more money than people think? Does he just like MC (which I can understand)? Or is it just part of the Bates "mystic" that we all take at face value rather than looking behind the smoke and mirrors?
