I was talking to an Arsenal-supporting friend about Bates and he sent me
the following, which I thought summed it up pretty well:
". . . . . . it never ceases to surprise me that people expect Bates to
behave like a normal person. It has always struck me that he despises
all football fans and that he would take no interest in the game unless
he was making a profit - from those very people whom he despises. His
first involvement with a club - Oldham? - was when he was still active
in building and property development. He presumably saw Oldham as a
piece of real estate from which he could profit but soon saw bigger
opportunities at Chelsea which he bought for a £1 and sold for £140
million when it was £80 million in debt. His treatment of Matthew
Harding was at best vindictive - even after the man's death.
His involvement in the FA was solely to gain power and make money. His
building company owned the car park at Wembley as far as I remember.
And so to Leeds where his financial skullduggery was quite breathtaking.
At one stage you almost had to admire him for his barefaced cheek.
The man is crude and without style or class, but also a grandiose
narcissistic bully who will brook no interference with his
megalomaniacal plans.
Good luck with him - but don't expect him to behave normally or to be
treated by him with anything other than disrespect."
Nice to see the admiration with which our chairman is viewed throughout
the football world.
Peace,
Pete H
