Unlike some people (Including 'the old' me!!) I love football and not just (But still for my sins) LUFC. Hence I can happily watch another game and appreciate it. I love the way Barca (And Arsenal) play 'The beautiful game' BUT until those teams adopt a Plan B, and are able to change their tactics when someone "Parks the Bus" in front of the goal (Defending is also an art BTW), then they won't be TRULY great, like the 1970's Brazil team, the late 70's Liverpool Team, Real Madrid of the 60's and dare I say it, THEM in the 90's (That's me on some hit list then!). But to counter this, I am really struggling with a number of aspects of the modern game:
The Media - Just fawning, manipulative, objectionable, trouble causing twats. The Money - Just too much, absolutely killing the game, alienating the Professional game from the supporters (And reality!) The Cheating - Ashley Young, three match ban for the dive against QPR, followed by the next one, and the next ... see how long that continues then! A lack of support for the officials - With all the above combined, plus the sheer athleticism of the players these days, expecting basically two men per half, to be able to manage this without some 21st century assistance is surely Luddite'ism (If there wer such a word). Until we allow the men in charge to be able to (therefore) clamp down on the cheating, be able to have eyes in the back of their heads (Full marks to a linesamn last night for FINALLY getting involved and actually helping the referee). Unless they get this, fewer and fewer people will be daft enough to put their hands up and actually become a match official, and without them ... no game! StigOfTheDump P.s. Don't get me wrong mind you, when playing I was a referee's WORST nightmare!!! :-) > 1970 aside, I can't stand Chelsea because they play such brutalist, ugly > football. I genuinely don't understand why anyone would pay to watch it. > So I was sad to see Barca, for all the media fawning/UEFA favouritism, go > out. > > Hopefully Real - who I adopted as my Spanish team because of the Leeds > connection, and can't quote drop despite subsequently learning about the > whole Franco thing - will hammer them in the final. > > Come to think of it, I don't give them much chance against Bayern either. > > Ed. _______________________________________________ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email [email protected] PETE CASS (1962 - 2011) Rest In Peace Mate
