I don't believe that theory at all. Bates is a lot of bad things, but one thing I think you can't accuse him of is being a financial fackwit..............and only an f.f. would give up the chance to earn many tens of millions to avoid paying 5 million.
The thing that jumped out for me was that the mystery owner of the ground (who we all know is actually Bates himself) is pocketing 13 million or so in rent every year from the club. ( I notice the bastard also scored a century against Yorkshire at Headingley yesterday.)
