Richard, if by "thrusting ambitious" (and the BBC's "creative") you mean to
say people who want lucrative careers in finance, you are absolutely right
- people from all over, not just France, want to go to London. However
people wishing to actually produce something go elsewhere. In a 25mile
radius of where I live in deepest rural, rural France you will find the
("the" not "a") steelworks that produces the specialised alloys that no
modern aeroplane can fly without, you will find the world's leading tyre
manufacturer (factories too, not just head office), American pharma
(research centres + production facilities) and by slightly stretching the
25miles there is the World's leading cutlery town (predated Sheffield and
has obviously retaken its mantle with Sheffield's demise). All this in France's most underdevelopped region. My point wasn't to puff France though, it was to bemoan the apparent "laziness" and complacency in the UK - and I defy anyone who is based abroad to go back home with a positive image of the British work ethic after even a short time working in the UK. I think industrialists agree with me because in spite of the UKs manifest economic advantages (lower blue collar wages, lower social costs/ payroll taxes, more flexible and less onerous working conditions, easier access to capital etc etc) all the industry I cited above is now in France when it was once in the UK.
