Watched the game live on Al Jazeera. The feed was great until just after I saw Bellamy warming up, when it froze............during the few minutes it took to get it up again, I feared the worst, and sure enough I returned to the action to see the welsh bastards all celebrating.
Unlike many of the usual miserabilists who have already commented, I was quite impressed by the performance. I am with Gary Mac, who said before the game that he doesn't like the way Warnock's teams play, but you can't argue with the results. Up against surely one of the top teams in the league, on their ground, we were cruising a 0-0 draw really, until Ratface Bellamy came on. I don't think there are many other players of his ability in this division. Warnockball isn't much fun to watch, but I think I understand the thinking behind it: basically, you make sure you don't surrender possesssion in the middle third. If you only ever give them the ball back in their own third, you always have enough time to get your defensive shape right, and if, in Kenny, Pearce, Lees & Austin, you have a good basis of a defence, then the other team are not going to create too many problems. Ideally, when you launch the ball down the pitch, you would still retain possession at least some of the time...........we were intelligently trying to hit Reg Varney as often as poss (he has a great leap on him, even though every other aspect of his play appears to be crap), but even though he usually won his header, we rarely latched onto the knockdown. But even so, the system was working fine..........they were restricted to hopeful shots from 25 yds, until Bellamy arrived. I was impressed by Tongue. I think he could be a good acquisition. Lees was immense, and was really unlucky for the penalty. I too am a bit unsure about Peltier though. Twice he surrendered possession at crucial times deep in their right corner............once by being stupidly offside, and once with the most ridiculous foul throw. After the Hull game, we will have played 4 of the top 5 in the table in our first 6 games of the season. That's a pretty tough start for a brand new team. I am cautiously optimistic that results will pick up. _______________________________________________ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email [email protected] PETE CASS (1962 - 2011) Rest In Peace Mate
