I'd also add to Paul's reasons that I think having two teams breeds more
local rivalry - kids grow up having to like one or the other team.  You
therefore go to matches/support your team to wind up your
friends/neighbours/work colleagues/family.  Places like Leeds - there's no
real (local) rivalry.
