What do you use for a mobile Graham? If you don't want the Apple experience (and I hate iTunes too - work of the devil) most modern smartphones are fine.
I stuck a 32gb microSD card (~£30 I think on eBay) in my Samsung Galaxy S2, and just drag and drop files onto it. (because Kies is even WORSE than iTunes) and the audio player picks them up fine. Audio quality is fine for compressed files. Plus you can use bluetooth headphones and lose all the wires as well. Can't see me going back to a dedicated audio player again.
