Payments by Leeds United to players’ agents doubled to almost £1.3million last season, new figures published by the Football League reveal.

Agents fees incurred by the Elland Road club rose dramatically during the 2012-13 term, rising from £604,286 in the previous season.

United’s costs covered 76 transactions, 46 of them relating to transfers. That figure also climbed significantly from 45 transactions in 2011-12.

Last summer saw a major overhaul of the squad at Leeds with the signings of former manager Neil Warnock running into double figures.

Twelve loan deals also contributed to a total expense of £1,283,234, the fifth highest outlay in the Championship behind Blackburn Rovers, Cardiff City, Crystal Palace, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In all, Football League clubs paid £21.5million to agents between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013.
