I've watched and admired the Bundesliga for a long time now, many many
years ago it was very much a second class citizen when it came to money
and this effected their standings at European level (Mid to late
eighties/early nineties) but they stuck to the model that Ian mentions of
being part of the community and being for the fans. By sticking to their
guns and not signing overpaid journeymen/chancers they have then helped
create a fantastic match day experience (It is BRILLIANT, been to a couple
of games and it's a belting atmosphere) which the Fans are actively part
of, but also garnered loyalty (To a degree) from German born players,
which in turn (Through good management) has built a strong U21's and
National team. The £15 a ticket for a top game only works if you refuse to
pay Carlos Kickaball £250,000 a week.
There is a local team that proves you don't HAVE to pander to the players
and pay them over the odds, if they are involved in something special they
will be loyal, despite (several) better offers from other teams. Problem
for us is it's our Rugby League team!!! :)
