The program you are thinking of was called SOAP which was a "comedy" parody of 
the typical american soap programs of that era. Billy Crystal played one of the 
earliest openly gay characters on US TV called Jodie in the program. Now 
recognized retrospectively as one of the most influential and groundbreaking 
programs opening up prime time US TV to modern controversial topics such as 
sexuality and religion (which are not necessarily mutually exclusive!!). Great 
program shame it only lasted 4 seasons.
