Ian, Phil, Rev et al It begs the question of who is willing to take over, and I wonder if Betty is thinking that maybe this is a job that he doesn't want to return to.
I know from previous (painful) experience that if one leaves a position and then returns to it, in most cases it doesn't end happily. IMHO: I, Pete C (t'original one) 1) fervently wish this appointment is not taken on by Betty Boocock, so he can enjoy the highlands and I can travel and visit him and drink copious amounts of malt whisky of our choice at any time we wish. 2) will respect, admire and support the person that stands up, and successfully bids for the appointment.
