Graham,

I am a committed linux user and I currently use Linux Mint XFCE on older machines (mainly cos it's fast and light, not needing shed loads of resources like RAM and Processor Power http://www.linuxmint.com/).

The other option I use is Linux Lite (https://www.linuxliteos.com/) mainly because the support for new users, in the form of the on line manual https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/ is fab). I have used this on some really old machines for interested friends, it would fly on your PC.

Because it's an older machine you can experiment with lots of other things too: My old netbook is also used with a piece of software called giplayer which allows me to download BBC TV and Radio Programmes without any time limit on them :-)

Julia uses Mint on her netbook and found no difficulty in switching from Microsoft 7/XP. One thing she really likes is not being constantly asked about bloaty updates.

The beauty of linux for me has been the supportive community both online and amongst other users I know. And best of all its free!

I'm in Banbury from next Tuesday for a week so we could always meet up to set your Dell up if you are really confused!

Cheers,

John

Sent from my Toshiba Laptop using Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela :-)
