Agree he "did" relatively little in the title run-in, in terms of key contributions, but it was the feeling he engendered in the fan base that was his biggest effect. It gave an extra shot belief that we truly were a big club back in the big time and we could do it. That classic goal at home to Chelsea for example, didn't win us that match (made it 3-0 or some such) but it sent everyone away from the ground feeling 10 foot tall.
And in counterpoint his sale, though not key at that time in terms of performances (he was peripheral at the time) sent out a message that we couldn't keep his like happy. We couldn't accommodate the maverick, and the Strachan team ethos type player would always rule. Which was understandable but ultimately a little sad. He was a genius. A tw@t. But a genius. And we won that league. We applied the pressure, we won our matches. Scum couldn't cope with the pressure we put them under.
