I met Niggy, Nick and Dave Dowden pre match for a soft drink at the Northern Monk and as they left for the match I sat in the car and listened to the Forsyte Saga on Radio Four. I had considered joining them at Elland Road but to be honest I think I was the winner with Soames, Jolyon and Irene.
Later on I was standing outside Morrisons in the Merrion Centre waiting for my niece who was enjoying the shopping delights of the city. As I checked the days results using Morrisons free wifi (why on earth you need wifi to shop for groceries is beyond me) I realised that the current situation which is born of the demise of Ridsdale and his band of free marketeers shows where football has gone in all its disgusting detail. A bloke stood next to me (waiting for his missus to buy the makings of their Sunday dinner) asked me if I'd "heard the score?". When I told him he said "There was a time when I would have known the score because I would have been there. Not now though it's a shambles" My niece appeared and we set off to drive home. I half heartedly listened to reports on Radio Leeds and Radio five but in the end opted for radio silence and the tale of an afternoon's shopping. It's come to that. And to be honest if it hadn't have been for the niece's insistence on shopping (she lives in Brisbane where I believe shops are a rare thing) I would have been out walking with sometime lister, Alan Dellow at Cow Green. The common thread in all this, for me, is the list. A group of people who I enjoy a drink with, who I enjoy talking with, who I would enjoy the outdoors with but who I currently can't bring myself to go to a football match with. Have a good Sunday my friends.
