My dad is into astronomy and bought my son a celestron telescope for Christmas. Not sure how much he paid but it seems pretty good - you can see jupiter's 4 largest moons through it. I think there's some info on the bbc site - either sky at night or stargazing live. You could check out if there's an astronomy club near where you live, they might be able to offer advice.
