I said last Sunday that my optimism for the season had lasted all of 4 minutes
but I had got some of it back as we made our way to the ground. Full pubs and
an air of expectation helped fuel my good thoughts but as has happened so often
it was all in vain.We got the team news and were impressed and pleased that we
were starting with 2 up front with Antonsson getting his first start. We were on
the front foot and things were going OK when out of nowhere they had a break
that cut through our defence (down our left side) and as Green came out in a
attempt to smother the ball, their striker planted it past him and into the
net, So 0 1 down with only 15 minutes gone.
We did bounce back to a certain extent, and with Mowatt and Hernandez pulling
the strings we took a bit of control. Our best chance fell to Antonsson whose
snap shot came back off the bar.
We continued to threaten and a lovely ball by Mowatt was met by the oncoming
Sacko and his shot somehow squirmed under their keeper 1 1 and well deserved.
We continued to press for the rest of the half and as we went into the break
there was a general feeling that we would come out second half and win the game.
How wrong we all were. We just never got going second half and not long after
the re-start they got a corner. Well you can guess the rest - back to the days
of McAllister- we let the ball bounce in the box and failed to clear it. No
great surprise , given QPR and Fleetwood that we conceded from the corner.
That was it, really, game over. We huffed and puffed a bit but had no real idea
and no way of breaking them down. Wood went off and was replaced by Roofe.
Later on Phillips came on and he nearly got the equaliser when a poor corner
failed to beat the first man but the defenders clearance screwed off him and
hit the post.
Somehow the ref gave us 7 extra minutes to try and get the equaliser but we did
not even come close.Overall we were poor. Mowatt and Hernandez were OK,
Antonsson tried hard and will score goals, Roofe gave of his best when he came
on but nothing worked for him. The rest pretty much stole a wage today.
Whislt Bamba is in the team we are not going to keep a clean sheet. Green is
not what we needed. Ayling did OK but isĀ  not the answer to our prayers, and
whilst everyone seems to think that Bridcutt will make everything all right I
do not see it myself.
This was a bad day and given Cellino's past and as daft as it sounds, Monk is
under pressure.
Thankfully(?) we have a chance on Tuesday to make things right but we need to
get things sorted and quickly. The crowd (27K) have lost all patience and the
team need to give us all something to get excited about
A bad day all round
Dave
