I am going for the idea that we are going to spend so much of the game
attacking and in their half that our defence will not come under pressureMy
main worry with that back 3 is lack of aerial ability - we would be back to the
Gary Mac 'scared at every corner' routine. Hopefully having two good wing backs
in Ayling and Douglas, a better keeper than Felix / Longeran behind them and
the extra man in Phillips (and cover from Klitch / Baker) in midfield will be
enough to compensate for their frailties
Like everyone I am surprised by the fact that we have not (yet) brought in
another centre back, the fact that we are linked with a return of Pennington,
the fact that MB seems to rate Cooper, and finally by the fact that Pontus is
(allegedly) not playing despite the fact he is our best defender, hardly played
in the WC and has been back almost a week. I do worry that MBs lack of interest
in defence may be a real Achilles heel and that in every game we can end up
dominating, scoring goals but then throwing points away by giving away two soft
goals at corners
Time will tell- but a full house (inc away fans) in the August sunshine is
certainly something to look forward to, in front of the cameras and with an
extra hour and a half drinking for everyone

Dave, I share your enthusiasm however having heard Jansson is not playing
you've got ask if a central back 3 of Cooper , Beradi and Phillips really
represents progress from last season.
It's very worrying.

You are very probaby going to be correct re Stoke but as you say that should
not be the yardstick. Firstly I (and many others) reckon that Stoke will be THE
team this season or certainly right up there. Secondly it will take time for MB
to get his ideas implemented. Thirdly as Jeremy A posted, I am also of an age
when I want us to be entertaining etc
So provided we give it 100% and try and implement the attacking, attractive,
possession with purpose type football that MB has promised I will be applauding
them off irrespective of the result. I do think the patience of the fans will
play a major role this season. If we can stick with MB and get behind ALL the
players then it will allow them to try his brand of football but if we get on
their backs then it just won't work. As a fan it is often easy to see which
players are lacking in confidence and even more so when you know they are
scared of making a mistake and being pilloried by fans - they go into their
shells, hide from responsibility, get rid of the ball asap and are afraid to
try anything.
Having said all that I am already buzzing for Sunday and wished we had the
12noon kick off tomorrow rather than having to wait and extra day
There is a feeling, that we have not really had before a ball is kicked that we
could, just, maybe, possibly be at the start of a great adventure. One that will
bring fun and entertainment back and (hopefully) some success

I hate to be negative but I cannot see us beating Stoke. But maybe that should
not be the yardstick for the rest of the season.

Did not tell us much (anything we did not already know) - I know nowt about
cars but Jamal Blackman seemed to be driving a nice one.
The fact that the programme was made and aired just shows what a coup it was to
get Bielsa and how big his profile is, also shows that despite all our years
out of the Prem we are still a (sleeping) giant of the game
Finally it just ratcheted up my anticipation for Sunday that little bit more -
approaching fever pitch now
I just hope the match going fans can put all the disappointments and problems
over the years to one side and get 100% behind the lads on the pitch- reading
on waccoe that some fans actually want and hope that Cooper messes up is
disgusting. Booing the likes of him (and Pennington if he does in fact come
back) etc is just counter productive.
We have a genuine chance this year but we need to let the past be the past and
get behind all the players and the management and show patience when it is not
all going to plan. The worst thing that can happen is for us to drive MB out of
the club and put us back at square one.
COME ON YOU WHITES
