An amazing turn out of over 30k for a midweek game in the caribou cup mainly comprised of non season ticket holders if my area of the ground is anything to go by - 3 of the 7 of us were absent and I barely recognised anyone near me , such is the allure of Bielsaball and cheap tickets. One way or another the crowd got its money's worth. 8 changes meant that we were very disjointed at times in the first half evidenced by the fact that we allowed volks a free header early on that luckily was right at kiko - not sure why Meslier did not start. We improved a bit and had a couple of long range efforts the best of these was a cracker by Nketiah on the edge of the box that hit the post. We fell behind ,surprise surprise, to a corner that should not have been given, another free header and this time kiko could only push it into the net. Minutes later things went from bad to worse when Phillips was left for dead and the cross was tapped home , a good move by them to be fair So 2 down at hal time. Even worse the great young Hope's from last season Clarke and shackleton were totally anonymous as was the debutant McAlmont and we expected at least one to be subbed. In the event Bielsa went for it and subbed all 3 ! A gamble that paid off. We looked a different team and took control as they tired. It took a bit of luck to score the first as butland kicked the ball out and it hit his defender on the back and fell to Nketiah, in some ways it was an easy chance but I know many players who would have messed it up, Eddie on the other hand fini9it with aplomb, putting the ball through butland legs and then just strolling into the net with it, a class finish. We came close on a few other occasions as Nketiah just failed to get a tap in at the far post. The equaliser came with a lovely cross by Davis that went over Eddie but was headed home by Costa. We tried hard but could not find a winner and so to pens.Douglas Costa Phillips and Nketiah all scored with no scares but they started and scored all 5 fairly easily and so Harrison needed to score for sudden death but hit the post -the crowd chanted his name so no hard feelings.
