I can confirm the brilliant treatment we ( me and my brothers went ) were
given in Bilbao. We were worried about the reception in Spain since our media
we pushing the line that the Spanish were on the side of the Argies re
Falklands, and showed pictures of the " black whole of Bilbao "One journo (
Terry something) even wrote a story about someone "spitting on his shadow " a
massive insult, because he was English! Met Terry later and he admitted it
was main,y crap, some tramp had spat on floor as he walked past, just a
coincidence, but made a good story
In the event we were treated like royalty, lots of free drinks and food , the
Basques loved the English because HMS Hood (???) had beaten a blockade and
saved them all from starvation in the war
We got our own 'guide's- Billy the Basque who showed us round and get us an
invite to dinner at some head honchos house, where another guest was an ex
Athletic Bilbao player
Still right up there with my favourite ever foreign trips
Got lots of tales - they taught us to say "GORA EUSKADI" rather than viva
Espana !!DaveHaving a real old reminice to myself !

He's already managed my favourite club in the Spanish league, in the shape of
Athletic Bilbao. (Choosing my words carefully so I don't call them a 'Spanish
club', in view of their Basque following).
I've never been there, but I've 'supported' them in Spanish football since
1982, when I read that during the World Cup of that year the England fans had
got on well with the Basques when all 3 first round group games were played in
Bilbao, but not with the Spaniards once England got through to the second round
mini-group. So it was doubly glorious to see Bielsa's Athletic side outclass
Man United in the 2012 Europa League, beating the red scum home and away.
