Jack Charlton, God Bless you and Thanks………..Another of my Heroes Gone…….

Here’s a couple of amusing true stories about my meetings with Jack Charlton.
As I say these are true and not made up. They both amused me at the time and
I still smile whenever I think about him. The first story of meeting him was in
1963.<tel:+441963>
in Leeds, on a Sunday afternoon. At the time I was courting my first wife. I
didn’t get
on with her father at this time, so when we met it was at the the bottom of the
road,
leading up to the Whincover Estate. Opposite this, is the Ring Road and years
go it
was a vast green area with a cricket field. I got there a bit early and as it
happened,
being Sunday afternoon there. Was a cricket match being played. I parked up my
Vespa scooter just off the road and there used to be a couple benches for
spectators
to sit on and watch the the cricket, the bench was empty when I sat down.
Fooiishly
I was a smoker at the time, I got my baccy tin out and started rolling a fag.
Just as
I started, someone came and sat next to me on the bench, all of a sudden a
voice say
have you got tabby mate??? I looked to the side of me and to the shock of my
life,
It was Jack Charlton. I obviously said of course you can after I’d rolled my
fag I gave
the baccy tin to him and he rolled his own. We both lit up and had a chat, he
was a
lovely man, so natural, unaffected a real decent ordinary bloke.

The next time I met him, was in Malton near York. Jeannie, my missus and myself
were
at a Ford Dealership, Malton, launch of a new Ford or something. We were
invited because
the previous year we had bought a new Ford van and we went along because we
knew Jack,
Charlton was a guest speaker, along with the 'now' infamous Stewart Hall. This
was in about
the mid eighties and I was a Charter Boat, Angling Skipper. At the refreshment
interval,
knowing Jack was a keen angler I approached him and gave him one of my business
cards,
thinking maybe sometime I would get a booking from him. He took the card got
out a pen,
signed the card and gave it straight back to me. I explained the reason for the
card and we
both had a good laugh. At question time, I was first up and I asked him. "Why
on earth did
you never manage Leeds United”. He said “Simply because they never asked me”.
He would have been great as Leeds Manager, in all his managerial positions he
did well, even
at international level. That’s another record breaking Leeds United legend and
World Cup
winner that have gone….

God Rest His Soul, and heartfelt condolences to his family.
