Well that was drab, joyless and ultimately pointless. it may be that this “almost” three weeks off for most of the mainstays of the first team, one way or another, will give them the rest they need. Because the lot of them need recharging: passes going short, or astray; no movement to give targets to the man with the ball; more long balls than I can remember under MB; poor control; poor tracking back…
I understand Brighton had 3 or 4 CHalfs in their starting 11, including Ben White in midfield. He had a good first half. I got nostalgic for a while there. Their goal…Dallas (nominally our right back) was the man with runner into the box…when he crossed to the back post there was a bloke, unmarked, where our right back should have been. Amateur stuff. They did almost score again minutes later when someone else drifted in unchallenged from the right wing and cannoned a shot off Ayling onto the bar. The nearest we came was either Rodrigo just failing to get to Alioski’s cross after 5 minutes or the chance the Harrison blazed wide in the second half, when he should be hitting the target on his good foot. I don’t like Casilla but we had little choice I guess - and to be fair he had almost nothing to do. Dallas - put the effort in, a few nice give and goes down the wing, but they all ended up in dead ends. Ayling - the pick of the defence Cooper - surely only getting a game while the other CHalfs get fit. Alioski - a car crash in defence Struijk - proves that he is not yet a replacement for Philips…far from it…I would be inclined to play him at Half instead of Cooper. Klich - again loads of running and no end product - worryingly off the pace and marginal for several games Harrison, Rodrigo, Raphinha - peripheral…occasional flashes, but no sustained threat Bamford - think he had about 3 touches in their penalty area. We did look a little more focussed on track when Hernandez, Poveda and Roberts went on... We need a re-set. I’m glad the Southampton game is postponed.
