Out of lurkdom once more, for a quick comment on the observations of
his highness. Tanaka - the kid can play, no doubt about that, but is it
just me that thinks he should be playing 20 yards further up the pitch
(number 10 anyone!). It's fine just doing the Jan Molby impersonation
spraying passes about from the centre circle/halfway line, but he'd
create much more "damage" from further up the park!!

Here is an unsent draft from early September that I came across, but
     forgot
to send, with my feelings about signings in the summer window.
I've kept it as it was, but have added some comments with half a
     season's
     hindsight

Just to bore everyone rigid, I've done my take on the 10 players new
     to the
squad v those departed who were around in the 2nd half of last
     season.

     Klaessen v Cairns
Hardly significant either way, but Cairns does have the reputation
     of being
a good squad man off the field.
     * Nothing to add there*

     Roberts v Bogle
Roberts was not fully fit for much of his spell. Bogle has been
     disappointing defensively. But could improve.
*I think he has improved since the early games, and remains first
     choice
     IMO*

     Cresswell v Debayo
Cresswell was hardly used, and Debayo will probably not get so much
     bench
time now we have signed a few more bodies, so chance to play and
     develop in
     U21s.
     *Nothing to Add*
     Cooper v Wober
On the face of it Wober should be an upgrade over Cooper who looked
     shaky
when used. But I'm uncomfortable that Wober has been allowed back
     at the
seeming expense of a great club servant.

     Shackleton v Schmidt
Shackleton was hardly used in the 2nd half of last season. Schmidt
     should
be an upgrade in either full-back position.
*Schmidt not had many minutes, but looks ok. Not sure that Farke
     feels he
     is reliable!*

     Gray v Tanaka
Archie was a huge loss, especially in terms of potential. Tanaka
     will have
to be very good to make up for it.
*Tanaka has been a star. Needs a few more goals and assists to
     really seal
     it*

     Kamara v Rothwell
Rothwell's supposed assist and scoring potential may make up for the
     steadiness of Kamara.
*Not enough goals or assists, but more positive than Kanmara. The
     best of
a very poor bunch on set pieces*

     Summerville v Solomon
A big gap to fill for Solomon, but his premier league pedigree
     suggests he
might even be up to it, if he is fit.
*Solomon started slowly, but has grown into it. Won't reach
     Summerville's
     goal totals.*

     Rutter v Aaronson
Big shoes to fill again, but a year ago I'd have rated Aaronson
     higher!!
*Not really filled Rutter's shoes. Gets knocked off the ball in
     situations
where Rutter would have retained it*

     Anthony v Ramazani
Will Ramazani get more chance than Anthony did to figure?
He will have to have more strings to his bow than just being 3rd
     choice
     left winger.
*Ramazani has a bit more x factor than Anthony, and consequently has
     contributed more*

Signing Rodon permanently, and Struijk coming back, will hopefully
     be the
most significant developments regarding the defence.

With the lack of options at No 10, we need Aaronson to shine, and 4
     of the
6 new boys to step up and we might be good enough.
*Alternative to Aaronson is still an issue, as is a 9 who can
     provide both
     presence and goals*

I think that you are being ever so slightly unfair to Aaronson who,
     for 70
minutes normally, can upset teams with his energy and mobility just
     as much
as Rutter could - and he has a very slightly better conversion rate
     :)

I would have Rutter like a shot over Aaronson of course but I do
     recognise
that Aaronson has definitely made a positive contribution this year.

As an aside, I would prefer Aaronson to work on his stamina rather
     than his
"strength" - if he could run around during the last 10 minutes as
     much as
he does in the first we would have an even more impressive goal
     difference.
