John Helm in 1989 asked " have you ever seen a better goal , and have you ever seen one better timed ?" We have now, John, certainly as far as timing goes- last seconds of the match What an ending, what a result, what scenes, what an atmosphere. This is what makes it all worth it - I've lost count over the years how many times my wife has asked why do you keep going when it makes you so miserable? Tonight dear is the reason. There is nothing like it.
A fairly humdrum, even boring match for the most part , them clinging on to their lead, us huffing and puffing and trying to break down a stubborn, well organised and resolute defence, on a day when none of our players were quite 'on it' - Tanaka, James , Solomon all that bit off, Piroe back to Mr Invisible and Gruev having a poor game. But who gives a toss when it ends like that. Sunderland to be fair did start brightly and took the game to us, Meslier having to make a couple of routine saves before awful defending by Ampadu let their lad through to shoot and in it went off the post, no idea ( given what came later with DF) how he avoided being booked for over celebrating, goading the fans , then having a prayer? After that we pretty much camped in their half but never created any real chances. We were shouting for Rothwell to replace Gruev but had to wait for the customary 70th minute for it to happen . Just for self praise I will mention that as the 70th minute approached I speculated that he may also take off the tired looking Tanaka and bring on Struik so Amps could go to midfield As our corner / free kick count began to add up my son started with " this is the one - 9th time the charm" " this is it 10th is the charm" - Well it got to " 14th is the charm" as Rothwell came over to take a free kick near the corner , in it wentat pace and Stuik leapt up and nodded in 1-1. Get in Would we be happy at a point at that stage , maybe since we never looked liked scoring. Then on the 94th minute my lad with " everything after 14 is the charm" - a corner by Rothwell a total mishit by Ramazani, back to Rothwell, a great ball in and Struik again, and then absolute mayhem on the pitch and in the stands To be followed with I predict a riot, MOT, Leeds are falling apart, and Dan with his " oi oi oi" - amazing stuff Got in watched the last 15mins on sky and the post match scenes- loved hearing Warnock slagging off the officials for booking Dan " they don't understand the game " So Sunderland out of the picture and Burnley 7 plus GD behind us - in reality it means we need to lose 3 times when they win, plus match us for the other 10 games- a massive ask for them Got to admit I am quietly confident of promotion now but we need to go on and grab it Brilliant night Dave _______________________________________________ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: https://mailman.gn.apc.org/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email [email protected] Find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/leedslist/ The Rev, John Lee.
