Claire Warwick and I are involved in a talk at Leeds Local Studies
Library in July (7th) as part of their British Library sponsored 'Voice
of the Fans' project. There should also be a blog piece from us shortly.
The accompanying exhibition opens in May sometime.

The talk : 'Marching On-Line Together" with a subtitle of 'a history of
the Leeds United Email List'.
Claire Warwick and John Boocock discuss the origins and history of the
Unofficial Leeds United Email List and football supporters in
Cyberspace. The ‘Leeds List’ claims to be the oldest surviving football
supporters’ email list in the UK. Starting life on Internet Relay Chat
in the early 1990s, the 'List' parallels the democratisation and
development (or otherwise) of the internet. Claire and John will tell
the tale of a community of football supporters coming together using the
internet over three decades. Initially mainly inhabited by techies and
academics, the ‘List’ soon became the on-line home to Leeds United
Supporters from all walks of life, spread right across the World. As
well as developing strong bonds otherwise not available to isolated
Leeds United fans, it also produced a language of its own, a rather
exceptional football tournament, some memorable meetings, and some
headaches for Leeds United. Claire and John will will also compare the
'List' to the emergence of other social networks and point out some
rather striking cultural differences.
Put this in your diaries if you are free and in Leeds at 6pm on Monday
7th of July
Cheers
Betty
