Two major factors here, as with ANY relegated side;

1) The confidence of the players will be down and fragile - they just went
through a season and lost the majority of their games.  If they don't win
their first few games comfortably then what optimism they had will crash and
it will take them at least half a season to recover.

2) The players they have retained are used to life in the premiership.
Championship football is very different.  You get less time on the ball, the
pitches are generally not as good, the referees are not at good, and its
certainly a bit different playing at Colchester on a Tuesday night than
Anfield.  

The converse is true often for promoted sides, and that’s why you see
promoted sides starting the season really well (Luton last season).
