In the early sixties I met with Gil Merrick, then the Birmingham manager but had been the England goalkeeper for the loss against Hungary. He told me that the defeat had so affected him that he retired years earlier than he had planned. He likened the effect to that of a "punch-drunk" boxer.
He considered that Puskas coupled with the centre forward, who's name escapes me, was the greatest duo ever to play. Far greater than the Puskas / DiStefano pairing at Real Madrid. As old as I get, the Hungarian team of the fifties has never had an equal.
